Edge Detection
Results with EdgeDetector 1.1
After Smoothing the Original Image
The original head image was smoothed with
Gaussian filters with three different sigmas (SG). When
EdgeDetector 1.1 was run, the value of
parameter ES was fixed at 30.0. Images in each section correspond to the LL
value of 100.0, 80.0, 60.0 and 40.0 in the order of from left to righ in each
row, and from top to bottom row.
As stated in the page with unsmoothed image, the main
improvement of EdgeDetector 1.1 over 1.0 is that it is able to detect more
edges close to one another. However, such edges tend to merge or disappear in
the smoothed images. As a consequence, improvement in the results shown in
this page may not be as obvious as that found in the results from the
unsmoothed image. Especially with SG=1, areas with obvious improvement
include: the white strip at the top of the mouth; the bow-shaped black strip
over the big black area at the center of the brain; and the thin white strip
at the back of the head to the southeast of the brain.
The smoothed images: SG = 1, 2 and 3

SG=1; LL=100.0, 80.0, 60.0 and 40.0; ES=30.0

SG=2; LL=100.0, 80.0, 60.0 and 40.0; ES=30.0

SG=3; LL=100.0, 90.0, 60.0 and 40.0; ES=30.0
